In May 2025, Colombia officially joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Bilateral trade between the two countries hit USD 21 billion in 2024, making China Colombia’s second-largest trading partner.
Chinese investment is flowing into infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and technology. The Bogotá Metro was partly financed through international loans with Chinese institutions involved in the broader conversation.
This is not a future trend. It is already happening, and the gap between Colombians who can engage with Chinese counterparts directly and those who cannot is only going to widen.
Chinese business culture runs on relationships — what they call guanxi. And relationships, by definition, are built in language. An intermediary, a translator, or a string of emails in broken English will get a deal done, but they will not build trust the way a direct conversation does.
Even basic Mandarin proficiency signals something that Colombian professionals rarely signal to Chinese partners: genuine interest and commitment. That impression alone opens doors.
Beyond relationship-building, Mandarin speakers are in genuine demand across logistics, import-export, retail, manufacturing, and any company with supply chains that run through China — which, in Colombia, is most of them.
The script takes time, the tones are unlike anything in Spanish, and reaching full fluency is a multi-year commitment.
But conversational Mandarin — enough to navigate business meetings, introductions, and basic negotiations — is more achievable than most people assume, especially with a structured approach and a native instructor from day one.
Our Mandarin courses run from A1.1 through B2.1. Group classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm Colombia time. Private sessions are available with full scheduling flexibility.
